First Board Strategy Session
Your words and your vision are so powerful. I remember that last year, I posted on Instagram how I am manifesting my next chapter which is to explore getting board roles. One of the reasons why I wanted to get a board role is to leverage the skills that I have learned over the years as an external auditor and a regulatory controller and see how I can advise organisations and ensure that they achieve their main objectives. It will also be an opportunity for me to see other areas that I am not exposed to in my day job and further prepare for bigger roles in the future. Well, long story short I was accepted into Minerva’s Board Prospect Programme. Minerva is a firm that specialises in placing non executive director roles in the non for profit sector. Minerva noticed that many boards still lack diversity and there are a lot of diverse professionals who have the skills but have not been able to secure a board role. I was fortunate to be placed with a shadow board role with City Lit. City Lit is based in London and is the ultimate destination for online and classroom based adult courses. It offers an array of courses across a range of subjects including art and design, music, dance, history, writing, computing, massage, languages, and more. As a self-identified bibliophile and a Certified Public Accountant who maintains her accounting license in Florida; I think that it is so important to learn and to never lose that intellectual curiosity. I even registered for a creative writing class in May because I am keen to really understand City Lit and its students’ experiences so that I can make sure that I am able to advise faculty. So far, everyone has welcomed me and really encouraged me to get involved and contribute. Still early days but let this be a reminder that your words and vision are powerful because they will then shape the actions that you take.
