Art Tour Continues: Soulscapes
I continue with my art tour. This time I checked out the Soul Scapes exhibition curated by Lisa Anderson, Managing Director of Black Cultural Archives, at the Dulwich Picture Gallery before it ended on 2nd June 2024. Soulscapes offers alternative views on landscape art by exploring our emotional connection to the world around us. The exhibition concept grew out of the Covid-19 lockdowns and is grounded in a shared contemporary experience which served as an urgent reminder of the significance of nature in our lives. I remember cherishing the 60 minutes that we were allowed to go outside for fresh air during the pandemic lockdown. I appreciated the trees, the birds, and the fresh air. All the things that I took for granted pre-pandemic. Amazing what limited access does to us.
The exhibition also drew on the themes of belonging, memory, joy, and transformation. Soulscapes invited us to consider how our personal relationship with our surroundings might be informed by our identity and collective histories. It reflected the potential of landscape art to examine the past, reconsider the present, and shape the future. The exhibition features leading contemporary artists such as Sir Isaac Julien, Alain Josephine, and Christina Kimeze. As always I will continue to share my art discoveries.
